Summer Shark Season 2008/2009

After some long winter months with no activity, the spotters are beginning to see the signs of summer returning, with 2 sharks being spotted in our waters already this month. On 5th August a shark was spotted at the Hoek, Noordhoek and on 18th August one was also spotted at Muizenberg. With this in mind we ask all sea-users to familiarise themselves with the four flag system used by the spotters....

Hudson

On 20th July 2007 Hudson Gwala died tragically. He was employed as a shark spotter at the Hoek, Noordhoek through the KEAG Working for the Coast programme since October 2006. Earlier this year he was excited to have spotted a shark at the Hoek and just a few weeks ago he reported seeing the return of some whales into the bay. Shark sightings at the Hoek

The shark spotters at the Hoek, Noordhoek, have recorded 3 shark sightings between 31 March and 14 April 2007. The previous sighting was in October 2006. Sharks sightings were also reported this month by a paddler off Long Beach, Kommetjie and a surfer at Dunes.
