City to fund shark spotters for five years
THE City Council has agreed to support a five year funding grant for the City’s Shark Spotting Programme. It has also decided to forego the option of installing shark nets at this stage. The programme will operate on a full time basis at Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, St James, The Hoek and Long Beach at Kommetjie; and on a part time basis at Glencairn, Clovelly corner, Blue Waters, Mnandi, Monwabisi, Strandfontein, and Strand. The City also supported the establishment of a formal Cape Town Shark Unit as shark safety is a permanent long term commitment by the City in the interest of its communities and visitors.
