Shark Spotters Programme gets support from Mayoral Committee
MEDIA RELEASE NO. 413 / 2012 18 MAY 2012
The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee(Mayco) this week adopted a recommendation to extend its support of the Shark Spotters Programme for the next three years, until 2014/2015. This recommendation will now serve before a full Council Meeting at the end of the month.
The City believes this valuable job creation project has lived up to all the responsibilities that were set out in the original Memorandum of Agreement(MoA) in 2007. Mayo hence decided that it would support a recommendation to continue supporting the Shark Spotters for a further three funding cycles, and fund a minimum of 80% of the budget of the Shark Spotting Programme.
“The Shark Spotters have become a highly recognized institution on Cape Town’s coastline, and has been essential to the improved safety experienced by beach users in Cape Town. Additionally, it has provided full time employment for 17 previously unemployed people, as well as seasonal employment for a further six people,” said Alderman Belinda Walker, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic, Environment and Spatial Planning.
The Programme has provided a daily service across a number of beaches without fail, for 365 days a year over the past five years.
During 2006 and in response to an increased number of shark incidents, the City along with other organizations such as the WWF-SA, the NSRI and Western Province Lifesaving, facilitated the establishment of the non-profit Shark Spotting Programme. As at March 2012, the Programme had recorded 1 200 shark sightings and as such was able to provide an early warning safety service to beach-goers on 1 200 occasions.
“The current five year funding agreement between the City and the Programme comes to an end in June 2012. We will now recommend to Council at the end of the month that the MoA with Shark Spotters be extended,” said Alderman Walker.
