Auction & Comedy fundraiser raises R58,000

Auction & Comedy fundraiser raises R58,000

Not even Eskom could keep the crowds away from Shark Spotters comedy fundraiser last night (22 June) at Ta-Da Creperie and Coffee Bar at Surfers Corner, Muizenberg! Nik Rabinowitz had the crowd in stitches with his own brand of shark-humour, a little known but well appreciated genre of modern comedy! And thanks to a generator loaned by Lifestyle Surfshop and solar lights lent bySustainable.co.za we were able to enjoy an uninterrupted evening of fun and laughter despite the scheduled load-shedding!

With so many generous donations from local businesses and individuals we were able to have an awesome raffle and lucky draw, as well as an incredible auction!

Local radio and surf legend Deon Bing hosted the auction amongst frantic bidding for some amazing items including a custom surfboard designed by Titch Paul at Lifestyle Surfshop, Van Hunks carbon-fibre SUP paddles, a Reef wetsuit, an adjustable SUP paddle from True Blue Travel, beginners diving lessons from Learn to Dive Today, a Van Hunks Longboard signed by Dale Steyn, inflatable SUP hire from Red Paddle Co, a shark cage diving experience from Shark Explorers, a Protea’s cricket shirt signed by Dale Steyn, a solar panel and lights from Sustainable.co.za and a stunning painting by acclaimed local artist Andrew Cooper.

Deon Bing and Greg Bertish auction the custom longboard designed by Titch Paul, shaped by Greg Stokes and airbrushed by Mike Burnham-King

Guests were also treated to some awesome lucky draw and raffle prizes including skateboards, boots and bags from Great White Sport & Surf, learn to surf vouchers from Surf Emporium and Gary’s Surf School, food vouchers from Primi and Ta-Da Creperie and Coffee Bar, upcycled jackets and bags from Re-Sail, and hampers from Coreban and Xpression on the Beach. The Corner Surf Shopalso made a generous cash donation to Shark Spotters!

So many lucky winners on the night were thrilled with their prizes and auction items!

A total of R58,000 was raised for the Shark Spotters program, which will be used to further the shark safety and conservation activities of the organisation. With over 186,000 spotting hours, 45 employees and 1,923 shark sightings since the program began, Shark Spotters has grown considerably in the last 10 years.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the businesses and individuals who have supported the program over the last decade and look forward to providing our services to the community for the next 10 years and more! Extra special thanks to all of the businesses that contributed to making this fundraiser such a success, and especially to Ta-da Creperie and Coffee Shop for hosting it and Greg Bertish, our chairman, for organising!
