Quick thinking, vigilance, and teamwork guided the Shark Spotters Net Crew as they took action to rescue a distressed water user in Glencairn on 6th November 2024. Responding to calls for help from two members of the public – one safely onshore and another caught in a rip current – the crew acted with urgency to bring the situation under control.
The team, currently undergoing lifeguarding training with Oceans Alive Conservation Trust, relied on their newly acquired skills to execute the rescue. Retrieving the pink rescue buoy installed by the NSRI at select South African beaches as part of the National Drowning Prevention Campaign, the crew quickly entered the water to assist the distressed bather. Meanwhile, another team member stayed on standby, prepared to alert emergency services if additional care was required. Thanks to their swift and coordinated response, the bather was safely brought to shore without further complications.
This rescue highlights the ongoing efforts to upskill our team members who work along the coastline. Reflecting on the achievement, representatives from Oceans Alive Conservation Trust stated:
“These lifesaving students are still in the process of completing their formal lifeguard training, so this is a very significant achievement. Oceans Alive Conservation Trust is extremely proud that they displayed remarkable skill, composure, and dedication during a critical situation.”
Lincoln Layters, one of the team members involved in the rescue, shared his perspective on the impact of the training, “The training made us confident to respond to the bather. The course taught us to be alert and vigilant in our surroundings.”
Well done to Lincoln Layters, Lucien Layters, Justin Bailey, Sulaiman Davids, Orin Horne, and Chandre Franke (pictured on the right) for their remarkable teamwork and bravery. A big thank you to Oceans Alive Conservation Trust for empowering our team with the skills they need to protect lives when it matters most.
